Stage 20 - Carapaz solos to Alpe d’Huez and seals the polka-dot jersey

**Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) won Stage 20 of the 2026 Tour de France solo on the second ascent of Alpe d'Huez on Saturday afternoon**, sealing the polka-dot jersey in the process and giving the 2026 Tour its last big mountain test. The 5,600 m queen stage ran 133 km from Le Bourg d'Oisans to the top of the most famous climb in cycling, with the Col de la Croix de Fer (HC) and the Col du Galibier (HC) before the two ascents of the Alpe. Carapaz went into the morning break, and the break never came back. By the bottom of the final climb he was alone, and by the summit he was the day's winner, the king of the mountains, and the rider who had turned the polka-dot jersey from a possibility into a certainty.

The form of the line - Carapaz at the front, Pogacar crossing 4:12 later in yellow, Vingegaard at 4:18 - is a clean summary of the GC and the climbing order at the same time. Evenepoel crossed at 4:35, the same gap he lost on the road on Friday, and the Belgian's race for second is now a race for the podium, not a race for yellow.

The polka-dot jersey, sealed

The polka-dot jersey was sealed in the only way the modern polka-dot jersey is sealed: by being in the break, by scoring at every categorised summit, and by staying clear of the GC favourites. Carapaz, a former Giro champion, took the maximum 20 points on each of the two HC climbs of the day and the maximum 10 on every first-category summit in the stage. By the line his total was 218 points, more than 80 clear of second place and mathematically unassailable with one flat stage to Paris left.

He is the second Ecuadorian to win the polka-dot jersey at the Tour, after his own 2024 win, and the first to seal it on Alpe d'Huez. The modern polka-dot jersey has been worn on Alpe d'Huez at the finish of queen stages seven times in the 21st century, and only Carapaz has finished the queen stage solo to take the jersey. The previous winners - Virenque, Pantani, Jalabert, Bahamonde, Hesjedal, Rodr�guez - all won the jersey on the road over the course of a Tour. Carapaz has won it on the last day of the mountains.

The break was always going to be the story. EF Education-EasyPost sent Carapaz up the road with three other climbers - K�mna, Yates, and Kelderman - and the four of them worked the gap to the peloton out to four minutes by the bottom of the Col de la Croix de Fer. UAE did not chase, Visma did not chase, and the GC group rode the climbs at a tempo that conserved energy for Sunday's Champs-�lys�es. The pattern of the last week - breakaway wins on queen stages when the GC is settled - held.

How the queen stage unfolded

The 133 km stage started in Le Bourg d'Oisans at 13:15 and ran south across the Col de la Croix de Fer (HC, 29 km at 5.2%) before the south face of the Col du Galibier (HC, 18 km at 7.4%) and the first ascent of Alpe d'Huez (HC, 13.8 km at 7.9%). The break hit the bottom of the Galibier with a 3:30 lead, with the GC peloton setting a tempo high enough to keep the gap steady but not high enough to close it. Carapaz took the maximum 20 points on each of the two early HC climbs, moving from tied at 178 with Pogacar to clear at 198 heading into the first Alpe d'Huez.

The first Alpe d'Huez was the dress rehearsal. The break held together up the climb, with K�mna, Yates, and Kelderman all working at the front. Carapaz took another 10 points at the summit and the four riders crested with 3:18 on the GC peloton. The descent into Le Bourg d'Oisans and the valley loop added 35 km and an hour of racing to the stage; the gap held at 3:18 across the valley and started to grow on the lower slopes of the second Alpe d'Huez. K�mna cracked at 6 km from the line, Yates cracked at 4 km, and Kelderman cracked at 3 km. Carapaz rode the final 1.5 km alone, with the GC peloton now 3:50 behind.

The line itself was Alpe d'Huez at its most photogenic. Carapaz crossed with both arms raised, the polka-dot jersey bright against the grey rock, the yellow-jersey Pogacar visible 4:12 later in the background. The crowd, the same crowd that had roared for Pogacar on Friday, roared for Carapaz on Saturday. The Tour de France's most famous climb had two home wins in two days.

The white jersey is mathematically del Toro's barring a crash in the finale. The team classification is UAE's by 14:22 over Visma - the largest margin in the team classification at the 2026 Tour.

Evenepoel in third, the rider who won the time trial and outsprinted Pogacar at Plateau de Solaison but could not sustain the form across the Alps. Ayuso in fourth, the Lidl-Trek co-leader who finished in the top 10 of every mountain stage. Del Toro in fifth, the white jersey, the heir-apparent, the next UAE leader.

What Sunday means

Stage 21 is the procession to Paris - 130 km from Thoiry to the Champs-�lys�es, with the green jersey decided on the final bunch sprint, the team classification confirmed on the road, and the yellow jersey taken to the final hotel. Pogacar will ride into Paris in yellow, his fourth Tour title, and become the second Slovenian to win the Tour four times. The ceremonial laps of the Champs-�lys�es will be the longest afternoon of the Slovenian's career.
