Stage 21 - Pogačar takes his fourth Tour title into a wildfire-shortened Paris

**Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) won the 2026 Tour de France on Sunday afternoon**, taking his fourth title on the truncated Stage 21 from Thoiry to a shortened Champs-�lys�es route. The 31-year-old Slovenian crossed the ceremonial finish line on the most famous boulevard in cycling in yellow, with a 1'28" lead over Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) and 1'54" over Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe). The traditional laps of the Champs-�lys�es were reduced from eight to three after French Prime Minister S�bastien Lecornu ordered the A400M military transport aircraft into the air to support firefighters battling wildfires across the Gironde and Landes. The Montmartre cobbled circuit, the climb added to the 2026 route as a one-day tribute, was retained. The ceremonial champagne, the podium, the post-race interviews - all held on the Champs-�lys�es as planned.

The win is Pogacar's fourth Tour de France title after 2020, 2021, and 2024, and his fifth Grand Tour overall. The yellow jersey goes back to the Slovenian's hotel room for the fourth time. Evenepoel, 28, takes his best Tour result - second place at 1'54" - and the white jersey-equivalent for the rider with the most stage-race climbing points. Vingegaard, 29, takes third at 1'28" - the Dane's first Tour podium outside the top two in five years.

How Sunday actually unfolded

The plan for Stage 21 was a ceremonial 130 km spin out of Thoiry, north-west of Paris, with a circuit of the Montmartre cobbled climb - the first time the climb had been used in the Tour de France finale since 2024 - before the traditional eight laps of the Champs-�lys�es. The plan changed on Friday night. Wildfires burning across the Gironde and Landes departments of southwestern France, and across central Spain, had forced more than 250,000 people from their homes; the Gironde fire alone had burned around 25,000 hectares by Saturday evening. The French Prime Minister S�bastien Lecornu ordered an A400M military transport aircraft into the air on Saturday morning to support the firefighters. Race organiser ASO shortened the stage on Saturday night. The Montmartre circuit stays. The Champs-�lys�es laps are reduced from eight to three. The finish line stays on the Champs-�lys�es.

The peloton rolled out of Thoiry at 13:15 under hard Parisian sun. The break went clear in the first 8 km - the same six riders who had been in the break on Saturday's queen stage, with the addition of two French domestiques - and held a maximum gap of four minutes before the sprinters' teams took control. The breakaway was caught with 12 km to race, on the lower slopes of the Montmartre circuit, and the sprinters' teams set up the first crossing of the cobbled climb in the same formation that will contest the Champs-�lys�es sprint.

The Montmartre circuit was raced at a tempo high enough to entertain the crowds but low enough to keep the GC intact. Pogacar crossed in yellow at the front of the peloton, Vingegaard at his wheel, Evenepoel three places back. The descent into central Paris was a rolling celebration, the peloton strung out in single file with the sponsors' cars and team buses in convoy behind. The Champs-�lys�es laps - three of them, not eight - were ridden at a procession pace until the final 200 m, where Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) took the field sprint ahead of Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) and Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek).

The podium ceremony on the Champs-�lys�es podium followed the format of the last four Tours: Pogacar in yellow, Vingegaard in second, Evenepoel in third. The Slovenian national anthem was played for the fourth time in his career. The trophy was the same trophy Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain had lifted before him.

The polka-dot jersey, the green jersey, and the white jersey

The polka-dot jersey was sealed by Richard Carapaz on Saturday's queen stage. The 33-year-old Ecuadorian wore the jersey for the final ceremonial stage and crossed the line in the polka-dot jersey, the second Ecuadorian to wear the polka-dot on the Champs-�lys�es after his own 2024 win.

The green jersey was confirmed on the final sprint. Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) finished third in the field sprint and the 13 green-jersey points that came with it took his final total to 445, more than 80 clear of Jonathan Milan in second. The Dane is the first Lidl-Trek rider to win the green jersey at the Tour.

The white jersey was confirmed on the road. Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) crossed in the white jersey at 3:17 ahead of Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious) and became the first Mexican to win the white jersey at the Tour. The 25-year-old is the heir-apparent to the UAE leadership for the 2027 Tour, and his form in the second half of the race - sixth on Stage 19, fifth in the GC at 7:42" - suggests the team will be backing him for yellow in two years' time.

The team classification

UAE Team Emirates-XRG won the team classification by 14:22 over Visma-Lease a Bike, the largest margin in the team classification at any Tour since Ineos's 2019 win. The team scored three stage wins (Pogacar � 5, del Toro's white jersey, the team time trial on Stage 1), 12 days in yellow (Pogacar from Stage 6 onwards), and the polka-dot jersey (Pogacar until Stage 20, when Carapaz sealed it). The team was the strongest at the Tour by every available metric.

Visma-Lease a Bike's Tour was, in contrast, a quiet disappointment. Vingegaard's third place at 1'28" is the Dane's best result since 2023, but the team came to the Tour with two co-leaders (Vingegaard and Matteo Jorgenson) and finished with one rider in the top 10 (Vingegaard, plus Kuss in 9th). The 14:22 gap in the team classification to UAE is the largest in any Grand Tour Visma has raced in five years. The post-Tour review at the team bus will not be a happy meeting.

The wider story: a Tour remade in three days

It took the race two and a half weeks to look finished, and then three stages to rip the script open. On Stage 15 to Plateau de Solaison (19 July), Evenepoel outsprinted Pogacar for the summit win and jumped to second overall at 5:00 back. Twenty-two kilometres from the line, Vingegaard - second on GC, the only rider mathematically within striking range - slid out on a curve and broke his collarbone. He abandoned in an ambulance.

Two days later, on the Stage 16 time trial between �vian-les-Bains and Thonon-les-Bains (26.1 km), Evenepoel turned the screw again. He took 28 seconds out of Pogacar, who finished second. Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team-mate Florian Lipowitz, fifth on GC that morning, crashed on the descent and abandoned with the same diagnosis as Vingegaard - broken collarbone.

By Stage 17, the math was brutal for the Belgian: Evenepoel needed 4:32 out of Pogacar in three mountain stages, and Pogacar does not lose four-and-a-half minutes in three mountain stages to anyone. Stage 18 (Voiron ? Orci�res-Merlette, 185 km, mountain) tightened the screws. Stage 19 (Gap ? Alpe d'Huez, 128 km, mountain) sealed the race. Stage 20 (Le Bourg d'Oisans ? Alpe d'Huez, 133 km, queen stage) confirmed the result. The 2026 Tour is Pogacar's.

What the next 48 hours actually mean

The Tour de France finishes on the Champs-�lys�es at roughly 18:30 CEST on Sunday. Pogacar takes his fourth Tour title. Evenepoel finishes second overall; Vingegaard, the pre-race favourite, third. The green jersey is Pedersen's. The polka-dot jersey is Carapaz's. The white jersey is del Toro's. The team classification is UAE's.

The Tour leaves. The racing does not. The Vuelta a Espa�a starts in three weeks - the Spanish Grand Tour is on a course that climbs the Angliru twice and finishes at the Bola del Mundo on stage 20 - and the WorldTour one-day calendar opens on the cobbles of San Sebastian a week after that.

The fourth yellow jersey is, in the end, the line that splits a strong Tour from a generational one. Pogacar has now climbed the 21 bends of Alpe d'Huez in 35:26, won five stages in a single Tour, taken his fourth title in six years, and confirmed himself as the strongest Grand Tour rider of his generation. The 35:26 is the upper bound. The Vuelta starts in three weeks.
