The Garmin Edge 1040 Solar sits at the top of Garmin’s cycling computer lineup, and after 5,000km of mixed-terrain use, we have a clear picture of what it does well — and where it stumbles.
What’s new vs Edge 1030 Plus
Three things matter: solar charging (extending battery in bright conditions), multi-band GNSS for tighter track accuracy under tree cover, and a snappier touchscreen. The display is the same size and resolution but noticeably more responsive.
Real-world battery
Garmin claims 45 hours, or "up to 100 hours" with solar. In our testing, we got a consistent 38-42 hours with multi-band GNSS enabled and the backlight at 50% — close to the claim. Solar charging added a few hours on long sunny rides but isn’t a game-changer.
Verdict
If you already own an Edge 1030 Plus, the upgrade isn’t urgent. If you are coming from an older Edge 520/830, the 1040 Solar is a transformative jump. Solar is a nice-to-have, not a must-have.
