Garmin LiveTrack Adds Crash Detection and Emergency Contact Auto-Alert

Garmin has updated its LiveTrack feature with crash detection and automatic emergency contact alerts. The feature is now available on Edge 1040, 1050, and newer Garmin head units.

How it worksGarmin LiveTrack uses the head unit's accelerometer to detect crash patterns. When a crash is detected, the head unit vibrates and shows a 30-second countdown on screen. If the rider doesn't cancel the countdown, an emergency alert is automatically sent to designated contacts via SMS and email, including GPS coordinates.

Why it mattersFor solo riders, automatic crash detection is a real safety upgrade. Previously, riders had to manually trigger an SOS or carry a separate device (inReach Mini 2). Now, the head unit itself can detect and respond to crashes.

False positivesGarmin claims the false positive rate is less than 1% in real-world use. Mountain bike crashes (which involve larger acceleration events) are more likely to trigger false positives than road crashes. Riders can disable crash detection if they find it triggers too often.

AvailabilityFree for all Garmin Connect users. No subscription required. The feature requires a head unit with an accelerometer (Edge 1040, Edge 1050, Edge 550, Edge 660) and a paired smartphone with the Garmin Connect app.
