2026 Tour de France — Pre-Race Briefing

The 113th Tour de France rolls out of Barcelona on Saturday 4 July and finishes on the Champs-Élysées on Sunday 26 July, covering 3,333 km across 21 stages and two rest days (13 July Cantal, 20 July Haute-Savoie). It is the first time the race opens with a team time trial since Mulhouse 1971 (Eddy Merckx's Molteni), and the first Grand Départ on Spanish soil since 1992.

• Two time trials: Stage 1 TTT and Stage 16 ITT, 26 km at Évian-les-Bains
• Pure sprint stages: roughly six (S5, S7, S8, S11, S17, S21)
• Final stage: Thoiry → Paris, 130 km, with a passage over Montmartre before the Champs-Élysées

Yellow-jersey favourites

• Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) — four-time defending champion, going for a fifth yellow jersey which would put him level with Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. He is skipping the Giro and the Vuelta this year.
• Jonas Vingegaard (Visma–Lease a Bike) — two-time Tour winner (2022, 2023) and two-time runner-up (2024, 2025). Won the 2026 Paris-Nice, Volta a Catalunya stage 5, and the 2026 Giro d'Italia. A Giro-Tour double would replicate Marco Pantani's 1998 feat.
• Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe) — Olympic double champion, Vuelta 2022 winner, debut season at Red Bull. Co-leader with Florian Lipowitz.
• Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) — Spanish GC hope at 23.
• Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe) — German co-leader.
• Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) — Danish GC contender.

Jersey contenders

• 🟢 Green (points): Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek), Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Premier Tech), Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Biniam Girmay (NSN). Philipsen pre-race: "Three to four flat sprints — not a lot of opportunities for us."
• 🔴 Polka-dot (climber): Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious), Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA-CGM), Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora), Tim Wellens (UAE-XRG).
• ⚪ White (U25): Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA-CGM, 19) vs Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek, 23). Seixas is the youngest Tour debutant in nearly 90 years.

Pre-race quotes

Pogačar: "Only 16 of the 23 days are really hard for me. I hope [Del Toro] takes this Tour GC."

Vingegaard: "I am one of the few riders who has been able to drop Tadej in a race — that motivates me to do it again this year. My form this year has been excellent; after the Giro I was not exhausted."

Evenepoel: "If we can enjoy the suffering as a team, results will come."

Seixas: "I'm most curious how my body will adapt after 10, 12, 15 days of racing in a row. I'm not afraid."

Edition-defining features

The 2026 Tour has five summit finishes and two time trials, skewed toward climbers and rouleurs. Pure sprinters have at most six clear bunch-sprint opportunities. The Alpe d'Huez double (Stages 19 and 20) and a 5,600-metre Stage 20 queen stage make the Alps finale the probable GC decider.
