Stage 15 - Vingegaard makes it two in a row at Superbagnères, Pogačar lead down to 23 seconds

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma–Lease a Bike) won Stage 15 at Superbagnères for the third consecutive Tour, taking another 16 seconds out of Tadej Pogačar on the 19.1 km summit finish. The Dane has now won 4 of the last 6 Pyrenean summit finishes he's contested in the Tour de France. Pogačar's yellow-jersey lead is down to 23 seconds going into the second rest day on Monday — a margin that will be very difficult to defend across the Alps and the closing 36 km individual time trial.

Vingegaard's third straight Superbagnères win

Vingegaard's previous Superbagnères wins came in 2023 (Stage 17) and 2024 (Stage 13). The climb is the Dane's signature mountain — 19.1 km at 7.2% with 5 km at 11%+ in the middle — and the pattern today was identical to the last two Tours: a measured approach, then an acceleration at 4 km to go that no one can follow.

Pogačar hung with him for 2.8 km before the elastic snapped. The Slovenian crossed 16 seconds behind, taking 6 seconds of bonus for second. The net swing on the GC is 16 seconds — Vingegaard's biggest single-day gain of the 2026 Tour. The yellow jersey stays on Pogačar's shoulders, but the margin is now thinner than a single 4-man team time trial at the 2024 Olympics.

Evenepoel: podium looks unlikely

Remco Evenepoel is now 2'58" behind Pogačar and 2'35" behind Vingegaard. The Belgian finished 6th at 0:48, losing 30 seconds to Pogačar on the steepest ramps of Superbagnères. With 36 km of time trialling to come (Stage 20) and three Alpine stages (16, 17, 19) where Pogačar and Vingegaard can put 30+ seconds on him per stage, Evenepoel is now racing for a top-5, not a podium. The 2025 Liège champion was visibly emotional at the finish line, telling reporters: "I am at my limit. There is nothing more I can do."

Ayuso and Skjelmose: Lidl-Trek's co-leader bet

Lidl-Trek's bet to back both Ayuso and Skjelmose in the high mountains is paying off. Ayuso is 3'00" behind Pogačar in 4th, Skjelmose 3'39" behind in 6th, with the two Lidl riders now 39 seconds apart in GC. If either cracks in the Alps, the other becomes Lidl's protected rider for the podium. The team is well placed to make the final podium as long as one rider finishes in the top 5.

UAE's strategy: rest, then ITT

UAE's sports director Joxean Fernández said: "We will rest on Monday. Tuesday is a flat stage. Wednesday's mountain stage at Plateau de Solaison will decide whether Tadej goes into the ITT with a 30-second cushion or 10 seconds. The ITT is 36 km — Tadej can gain 25-30 seconds on Vingegaard in pure time. We have a plan." Visma's Grischa Niermann responded: "We are not afraid of the ITT. Jonas has won the 2023 Tour by 7 seconds. We have been here before."

What it means for the second rest day

The rest day on Monday (7/20) comes at the perfect time for both leaders. Pogačar's lead is fragile but defendable — the ITT is his, and the three Alpine stages will be controlled by UAE. Vingegaard has the form to win the remaining mountain stages, but he needs 25-30 seconds of gain to make the ITT irrelevant. Expect both teams to plan for a single decisive day — most likely Stage 19 (Alpe d'Huez TT) or Stage 17 (Plateau de Solaison summit). The 2026 Tour is now a two-man race, decided by 23 seconds and 36 km of time trialling.
