Stage 9 - Mathieu van der Poel wins the punchy Corrèze finale

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech) won Stage 9 in Ussel with a signature long-range attack inside the final 5 km of the 154.6 km, 3,300 m-of-climbing Massif Central stage. Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor) was second, 18 seconds back, and Bauke Mollema (Lidl-Trek) third. The GC favourites all finished together, 32 seconds down on van der Poel, so Pogačar keeps the Maillot Jaune.

Van der Poel goes solo

The stage profile - punchy 3,300 m of climbing in the Corrèze, with the Suc au May summit 12 km from the finish and a rolling 5 km run to the line - was made for van der Poel. He followed the day's break over the early climbs, then dropped his companions inside the final 5 km to win alone. The Dutchman now has 9 career Tour stage wins to go with his 5 monuments.

Combative and green-jersey

Van der Poel also took the day's combativity prize for his 80 km in the break and the winning attack. He is now fourth on the green-jersey table with 132 points; the classification remains Pedersen (228), Merlier (153), Milan (114).

GC: no gaps

The GC group caught the last remnants of the break on the Suc au May and the descent to Ussel, then rode tempo to the line. Pogačar, Vingegaard, Evenepoel, Ayuso, del Toro and Lipowitz all crossed at +0:32 with the rest of the top 10. The Maillot Jaune, Maillot Blanc, Maillot à Pois, and team classifications are unchanged.

What it means for the rest day

Monday (7/13) is the Cantal rest day. Teams fly from the Corrèze to Aurillac for Tuesday's Stage 10 (Aurillac → Le Lioran, 167 km, 3,900 m of climbing) - a summit finish at Le Lioran, the first true mountain stage of the second week. Expect the first real GC shake-up of the Massif Central.
