The Tacx NEO 3M is Garmin鈥檚 third-generation direct-drive smart trainer, and it is the most realistic indoor-riding experience available in 2026. After six weeks of structured training, including a 200km simulated mountain stage on ROUVY and a 90-minute Zwift race, it sets a new bar for road-feel and accuracy.
Garmin acquired Tacx in 2019 and has released the NEO 2 (2020), NEO 2T (2022), and now the NEO 3M (2026). The 鈥淢鈥?in the name refers to the new motor-driven flywheel, which simulates downhill and inertia more accurately than the passive flywheel in the NEO 2.

Build & Design
The NEO 3M is a substantial piece of hardware. The frame is matte-black aluminum with a small status LED on the front and a single USB-C port for charging accessories. The motor housing is significantly larger than the NEO 2 to accommodate the new flywheel motor.
Setup takes about 10 minutes. The legs fold out for storage, the cassette swaps with standard tools, and the unit pairs with Zwift / ROUVY / TrainerRoad on the first try. WiFi auto-firmware is a real win 鈥?the trainer updated itself twice during the test period without intervention.
Real-world Testing
Six weeks of structured training gave a comprehensive picture. Road-feel is the headline: the motor-driven flywheel produces a more realistic inertia on climbs and a believable 鈥渃resting鈥?sensation on descents that the NEO 2T could not match. The downhill simulation is impressive 鈥?you can coast down a virtual 8% grade at 70 km/h without pedaling and the trainer accelerates the flywheel accordingly.
Power accuracy is excellent. Side-by-side against a Quarq DZero and the Favero Assioma DUO on the same bike, the NEO 3M was within 1.5% across the entire 100-800W range. That is within the claimed spec and good enough for all but the most precise lab work.
ERG mode is smooth and responsive, with no noticeable lag or hunting. The trainer reacts to ERG target changes within 1-2 seconds, faster than the NEO 2T (3-4 seconds) and on par with the Wahoo KICKR v6.
Noise at 200 W was measured at 56 dB on a sound meter at 1m, slightly quieter than the claimed 58 dB. This is whisper-quiet for a direct-drive trainer and noticeably quieter than the Wahoo KICKR v6 (62 dB at 200 W).
