TL;DR

The 454 NSW is Zipp’s 50-65 mm hookless carbon climbing / all-round aero wheelset. Designed with a Sawtooth pattern to improve crosswind stability. Tested over 2,500 km in JoyVelo’s summer block, including headwind, tailwind, and sidewind days.

Unboxing & Design

Zipp packaging is premium — the wheels ship in custom-fitted boxes with all necessary tubeless valves, tape, and a wheel-bag. Initial setup requires installing tubeless tape (included) and seating tires (a compressor is helpful). Tubeless valves are pre-installed.

Setup & Installation

Hookless carbon rims require tubeless tires and a compressor for initial seating. Once seated, the 454s run tubeless at lower pressures than hooked rims (good for comfort). Zipp Cognition DB hubs are centerlock disc only — adapters are available for 6-bolt but you need to buy them separately.

Real-World Data

In JoyVelo’s testing, the 454 NSWs crosswind stability was noticeably better than the 858 NSW and the Reserve 52|63 (no measurable drag penalty at 0° yaw, per Zipp’s data). Freehub engagement is the Cognition’s signature — 54 points of contact, very fast engagement with zero play.

Long-Term Use

The 454 NSW is the right answer for an aero-focused road cyclist who rides in crosswind-prone areas. The hookless design is stiffer and lighter than hooked rims at the same depth, which is great for sprints and climbing. Less ideal for: gravel riding (tire clearance is too narrow), and rim brake users (disc only).

Competitor Comparison

Main competitors: Reserve 52|63 (cheaper, similar crosswind handling), Zipp 858 NSW (shallower, lighter, less aero), Roval Rapide CLX II (more aero, more expensive).

Final Verdict

The 454 NSW is the right answer for a rider who wants the best crosswind stability on the market and is OK with the hookless tire requirement. Skip if you want tubeless + tube compatibility, or you want a deeper (50-65 mm) wheelset for flatter courses.

Asymmetric design is most noticeable in two scenarios. First: in crosswinds, where the front wheel is the deeper 67 mm and the rear is the shallower 64 mm, which reduces side-force on the rear and keeps the bike more stable in gusts.
