Unboxing & Design

Packaging: the Fenix 8 ships in a printed box with the watch, a silicone band (installed), a USB-C charging / data cable, and a quick-start card. The packaging is recycled-cardboard and the printed material is minimal. There is no charger brick — Garmin ships USB-C cable only, in line with the industry trend.

Display: the 1.3-inch (47mm) and 1.4-inch (51mm) AMOLED panels are the headline visual. The 47mm panel is 454x454, the 51mm is 454x454 (same resolution, larger pixels). Both panels are daylight-readable, and the always-on mode is a real productivity gain over the older MIP Fenix 7. The AMOLED panel is the reason for the $200 price hike over the Fenix 7 — AMOLED is more expensive to manufacture than MIP. The trade-off is battery: with AOD on and 1-2 hours of GPS per day, the Fenix 8 lands at 6 days. The Fenix 7 Pro in the same use profile lands at 8-9 days. Solar ring: the Fenix 8 Solar variant has a pure black solar ring around the bezel that replaces the older top-panel solar. The solar ring is less visually obtrusive than the older top-panel solar (which had a slightly translucent overlay that affected the display), and the solar efficiency is meaningfully better — Garmin claims up to 10-30% additional charge in direct sun. In our testing on the 51mm Solar in direct sun (3 rides, 1h each, ambient 25°C), the solar ring added 3-5% per hour. The improvement is real but not transformative.

Size and weight: the 47mm case is 47x47x14.2mm and weighs 73g with the silicone band. The 51mm case is 51x51x14.7mm and weighs 80g. For comparison, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is 49x44x14.4mm and weighs 61.4g. The Fenix 8 is meaningfully heavier than the Apple Watch Ultra 2 but lighter than the Suunto Vertical (86g). For sleep tracking, the 73g is acceptable; for 24/7 wear, the weight is noticeable but not uncomfortable.

Setup & Installation

Initial pairing: turn on the Fenix 8, select language, and the on-device setup wizard walks through the Garmin Connect app download (iOS or Android), Bluetooth pairing, Wi-Fi connection, and the optional Garmin Pay setup. The whole flow takes about 20 minutes on a clean install. Garmin Connect on the phone is required for the full feature set (notifications, music sync, Garmin Pay, Connect IQ store).

The TopoActive maps are preloaded for the region of purchase; additional regions can be downloaded over Wi-Fi. The 32GB internal storage is enough for multiple regions.

Real-world Data

GPS accuracy: tested on a 60 km loop ridden 3 times (sunny, overcast, light rain) with the Fenix 8 and the Garmin Fenix 7 Pro riding side-by-side, swapping watches at the halfway point. Multi-band GNSS locks in 3-5 seconds cold-start and 1 second warm-start under tree cover. Track accuracy was within 1-2m of the Fenix 7 Pro reference across all 3 weather conditions. In dense urban canyon (tall buildings on both sides, 15 km/h average), the Fenix 8 track was 1-2m off the reference line for about 3% of the loop — slightly better than the Fenix 7 Pro.

Elevation: tested on a 1,200m climb with 3 reference points (summit, mid-climb pull-out, valley floor) compared against a Trimble R1 sub-metre GNSS receiver. (2) Daily wear with gesture-only (lift-to-wake) + 1h GPS/day: 9 days. (3) Daily wear with AOD on + 2h GPS/day: 4 days. (4) GPS-only with music (10h ride): 11h. The 6-day real-world battery with AOD on is down from the Fenix 7 Pro at 8-9 days in the same use profile. The AMOLED panel is the reason. If battery is your top priority, the Fenix 8 Solar variant (MIP + solar ring) is the better answer.

Speaker and microphone in real-world use: phone calls on a busy road — the speaker gets loud enough to be heard but not as loud as a phone. In a quiet indoor environment, the speaker is clear and the call quality on both ends is good. The offline voice assistant responds reliably when triggered by holding the top-right button. Voice memos with geo-tag work as expected — the recordings are saved to the watch, transcribed in Garmin Connect on the phone, and displayed in the activity timeline. The missing piece is a fast export path to third-party note-taking apps.

Dive mode in real-world use: the auto-start at 4ft is a real-world win — there is no need to manually start a dive activity. The auto-stop after 5 minutes at the surface is a real-world win for divers who do multiple dives per session. The depth and duration logging is accurate. The only minor issue is that the watch face is hard to read at depth without a dive computer-specific screen layout — the standard data pages work but a dedicated dive computer screen with large numerals would be a better default.
