The Garmin Varia Vue is the first cycling-specific front headlight with a built-in 4K camera. Where the Garmin Varia UT800 (released 2018) was a headlight only, the Varia Vue adds a 4K-resolution forward-facing camera with incident detection, automatic video saving on impact, and Garmin's Varia radar connectivity. The result is a single front-mounted unit that both lights the road and records evidence in case of a crash.

Real-world Use

The Varia Vue mounts to the front of the bike with the same out-front mount as the Varia UT800 and Edge bike computers. Pairing with an Edge 1050 / 850 / 550 is identical to pairing a Varia radar — once paired, the Edge shows the Varia Vue's battery level, recording status, and headlight mode on a dedicated Varia data screen.

Recording starts automatically when the bike moves (configurable) and stops when the bike is stationary for 5 minutes. In testing, the 4K footage was sharp and color-accurate in daylight. At night, the footage picked up the headlight beam and the area immediately in front of the bike, but distant details were lost — this is a cycling light, not a low-light camera.

Incident detection worked reliably in our two crash tests (a controlled low-side and a stationary drop). In both cases, the Varia Vue saved 30 seconds of footage before the impact and 30 seconds after, then wrote a protected file that would not be overwritten by the loop recording.

The Garmin Varia Vue is the most ambitious cycling light ever built. For road cyclists who want both a smart headlight and crash documentation, the Varia Vue replaces the UT800 + a separate GoPro or Insta360 setup. The $799 MSRP is steep, but it is the only product that combines a 600-lumen smart headlight with 4K incident recording. For mountain bikers, the GoPro Hero 13 Black is still the better camera, but the Varia Vue is the better integrated system for road and gravel.
