Unboxing & Design
Packaging: the Edge 850 ships in a printed box with the head unit, the standard Garmin out-front mount, two additional rubber mounting bands (sized for 25.4 mm and 31.8 mm bars plus a longer band for aero bars), a USB-C charging cable, and a lanyard. The lanyard is new for the 2025 lineup and is intended for use with the electronic bike bell in urban riding. The head unit is slightly thicker and heavier than the Edge 840 (111 g vs 84 g for the 840 Solar), the result of a larger battery compartment and the addition of the speaker grille on the bottom edge.
Physical layout: the 2.7-inch transmissive LCD is the headline visual change from the Edge 840. The transmissive panel is rated at 1100 nits and renders the new 480x640 UI at a noticeably higher pixel density than the 840’s 246x322 MIP screen. In direct sunlight at full auto brightness, the 850 is readable where the 840 required shading the screen with a hand. In shade, the 850’s colour contrast is closer to a smartphone than a bike computer; the Group Ride sidebar, the Trailforks trail-colour overlay, and the weather radar layer all read instantly without the "wash out" that the MIP screen had under heavy cloud cover.
7 buttons: this is the underrated win over the Edge 1050. The 850 has 7 physical buttons arranged around the bezel, the same layout as the Edge 540 / 840. The Edge 1050 has only 3 physical buttons (start, lap, back) and relies on the touchscreen for everything else. For winter riding with thick gloves, or for rain-riding when the touchscreen misfires on water droplets, the 850’s physical buttons are a real-world advantage. The buttons themselves are slightly stiff and not as raised as the Edge 540’s, but the tactile feedback is consistent enough to find them by feel.
Speaker: the bottom edge of the 850 has a real speaker grille. This is the same speaker used in the Edge 1050, the Fenix 7, and the Edge MTB. It outputs voice prompts for navigation, audio alerts for radar, and the electronic bike bell sound. Volume is controllable in 10% steps. The 550, by contrast, has only a piezo buzzer and outputs Morse-code-style beeps for navigation turns and radar alerts.
Notable omissions versus the Edge 840: there is no Solar version of the 850. Garmin has explicitly confirmed the 850 will not get a Solar SKU. Multi-day tour riders and unsupported bikepackers should stick with the Edge 540 Solar or the Edge 840 Solar. There is no bundled heart rate strap or speed/cadence sensor in the box — Garmin has not bundled sensors with the Edge lineup since the Edge 1030.
Setup & Installation
Mount: the standard out-front mount works the same as every other Garmin Edge since 2019. The 850 is the same footprint as the Edge 840, so existing Edge 840 mounts, GPS-mount conversion plates, and K-Edge adapters all carry over. The 850 is slightly heavier at the front (111 g vs 84 g for the 840), so riders with a flimsy out-front mount will notice a small wobble on rough roads; the standard Garmin mount is rigid enough to handle it.
Initial pairing: turn on the 850, accept the licence agreement, pair the phone via Bluetooth, and the Garmin Connect Mobile app walks through ANT+ sensor pairing, Wi-Fi sync setup, Group Ride opt-in, and the Garmin Pay card entry. The whole flow takes about 12 minutes on a clean install. Wi-Fi sync is enabled by default and pulls ride history, courses, and firmware updates without needing a phone in the loop. For a rider who only needs one country, the 32GB Edge 550 is enough; for multi-continent touring, the 64GB on the 850 is the minimum we would recommend.
Sensor compatibility: ANT+ heart rate straps, ANT+ speed/cadence sensors, ANT+ power meters, ANT+ radar (Varia RCT715 / RTL515), ANT+ electronic shifting (Shimano Di2, SRAM AXS, Campagnolo EPS), ANT+ FE-C trainers, and Bluetooth Smart equivalents of all of the above. The 850 pairs all of these automatically once seen; re-pairing after a firmware update is not required. We tested with the Wahoo TICKR, Favero Assioma PRO RS pedals, and a Shimano Di2 12-speed group without any pairing issues.
Garmin Pay setup: enter the Garmin Connect app, tap Devices → Edge 850 → Garmin Pay, add a card, verify via the bank’s 3-D Secure flow, and the card is on the device within 2 minutes. Tap-and-pay works at any contactless terminal; the 850 shows the last 4 digits of the card on screen during the transaction. Tested with a Visa debit card and a Mastercard credit card at 3 retailers, both worked on the first tap.
Real-world Data
GPS accuracy: tested on a 60 km loop ridden 3 times (sunny, overcast, light rain) with the 850 and the Edge 1050 riding side-by-side on the same bike, swapping head units at the halfway point. Multi-band GNSS with SatIQ locks in 4-7 seconds cold-start and 1-2 seconds warm-start under tree cover. Track accuracy was within 1-2 m of the Edge 1050 reference across all 3 weather conditions. In dense urban canyon (tall buildings on both sides, 15 km/h average), the 850’s track was 2-3 m off the reference line for about 8% of the loop — same as the 1050 and the Roam V2 in our test. Tree-cover drift in dense redwood forest was 3-4 m vs the reference, on par with the Wahoo Roam V2 and within a metre of the Edge 1040 Solar.
5Hz MTB recording: tested on 3 downhill trails (300m, 600m, 1.2km vertical) on a trail bike. The 850 auto-switched from 1Hz to 5Hz recording at the top of each descent and back to 1Hz at the bottom. The 5Hz trace is visibly smoother through hairpins and high-speed berms compared to the 1Hz trace; the recorded .fit file is roughly 5x larger for the descent segment (about 80 KB per minute at 5Hz vs 16 KB per minute at 1Hz). For a 4-hour ride with 30 minutes of descent, the storage cost is about 2 MB — not a meaningful hit on the 64GB drive.
Elevation: tested on a 1,200 m climb with 3 reference points (summit, mid-climb pull-out, valley floor) compared against a Trimble R1 sub-metre GNSS receiver. The 850’s elevation was within 1-2 m of the reference at all 3 points, and the climb total was within 0.3% of the reference (1,196 m vs 1,200 m). The barometric altimeter is well-tuned; the 850 does not show the drift that older Edge models (530, 830) had on long climbs with rapid temperature changes.
Power meter accuracy (indirect): when paired via ANT+ to a Favero Assioma PRO RS, the 850 reports the power data at 1Hz with the same latency (typically 200-400 ms) as the Edge 1050 and the Wahoo Roam V2. We did not see any dropout or sticky-watt artifacts in 1,500 km of testing. The 850 does not introduce any measurable power-data latency that would affect ERG-mode trainer control.
Long-term Use
Battery — the headline complaint: tested across 4 ride profiles at 100% auto brightness, 25°C ambient, sensors + phone + navigation active: (1) Road 200 km audax, 6h 50min riding, 12h total with stops, screen on the whole time: 78% remaining at the end. (2) Mixed road training, 4-hour ride with auto-pause: 61% remaining. (3) MTB day, 4 hours with 60 min of 5Hz descent recording: 54% remaining. (4) Indoor trainer, 2 hours: 92% remaining. The "10-12h" figure is the audax case (12h wall-clock with screen-on riding + stops), not pure riding time. Pure riding time at auto brightness is about 14-15h. Locking brightness to 30% (which is dim but readable in tree cover and dusk) stretches that to 19-21h.
Smart fueling advice: tested across 4 long rides in 18-32°C heat. The advice is conservative on water intake (recommends about 0.5 L/h in 32°C heat, where we needed closer to 0.8 L/h to avoid a 2 kg body-mass drop) and conservative on carb intake (recommends 60 g/h on a 4h ride, where coach-plan mode recommends 80-90 g/h). The conservative defaults will not hurt a well-prepared rider, but a rider relying on the 850’s hydration prompt in extreme heat will under-drink. The 19.10 firmware added a "high-heat" toggle that raises the recommendations by 15-20%, which helps in practice.
Weather overlay: pulls the same MET Norway data feed that the Garmin Fenix watches use. Radar animation refreshes every 10 minutes; wind direction is a static arrow on the map. In 4 months of use, the weather overlay matched ground-truth conditions within 15 minutes for precipitation start/stop and within 5° for wind direction. The overlay uses about 80 KB / hour of cellular data on the paired phone; not a meaningful data cost on a typical plan.
Group Ride with 5-minute rolling averages: this is the feature that justifies the 850 over the Wahoo Roam V2 for a rider who regularly does group rides with a mix of Garmin and non-Garmin users. The 5-min average sidebar shows each group member’s rolling 5-minute power, HR, cadence, speed, and W/kg. It works with up to 50 riders; we tested with 8 riders in a single group and the sidebar updated every 2-3 seconds without lag. Non-Garmin riders (Wahoo, Hammerhead) show up in the group if they are sharing via the Garmin Connect Mobile app, but only basic power + speed data — HR and cadence are only available for riders with a paired Garmin head unit.
Trailforks integration: shows trail difficulty colour-overlay on the map and provides a post-ride breakdown of the time spent on green / blue / black trails. The post-ride breakdown is genuinely useful for MTB riders training for a specific event ("I spent 40% of my ride on blue trails — I need more black-trail volume"). The in-ride colour overlay works but is small and easy to miss on a 2.7-inch screen at speed.

Electronic bike bell: the headline social feature. Tap the screen bell icon (or press a paired SRAM AXS shifter button or a Shimano Di2 satellite shifter button) to play a bike-bell sound through the 850’s speaker. The sound is a realistic "ding-ding" with about 1.5 seconds of decay. Volume is adjustable. In urban testing, the bell is loud enough to be heard by pedestrians at 3-5 m and by other cyclists at 10-15 m. It is a much more polite alert than shouting "passing on your left" and noticeably more effective at clearing shared-use paths than a horn. If you ride in traffic, this feature alone may justify the $100 jump from the Edge 550 to the Edge 850.
Firmware update cadence: 4 firmware updates in 7 months (17.20 launch, 18.00, 18.40, 19.10). The 18.00 update added the new UI; 18.40 fixed a ClimbPro crash on courses over 200 km; 19.10 added the smart-fuelling v2 and the new Timing Gates UI. Smartphone dependency: the 850 does not require a phone for ride recording, but the weather overlay, Group Ride, smart-fuelling, and Garmin Pay all require a paired phone with Garmin Connect Mobile running. We did 3 rides with the phone in airplane mode (to test offline behaviour); ride recording, GPS, sensor pairing, and the on-device ClimbPro / Trailforks / Timing Gates all worked. The phone-dependent features silently disabled themselves and re-enabled when the phone reconnected.
